Coach Dennis Fairall and the Windsor Lancers Track and Field program proved again this weekend why they are the most dominant Track and Field Team in the country. Coming into the weekend with the #1 ranking on both the Men's and Women's side, the Lancers didn't disappoint, capturing both the Men's and Women's 2005 OUA Track and Field Championships.
The Lancer Men captured their 14th OUA Team title in the last 15 years while the Lancer Women regained their title, which was their 11th in the last 15 years.
On Saturday, Windsor's Sara Jibb and Lora Dunster got the Lancers rolling early capturing Gold and Bronze medals in the Weight Throw with tosses of 16.26m and 15.67m respectively. Following suit in the Weight Throw, the Men's Lance Montigny placed 2nd with a throw of 14.65m, while Ian Glassford's toss of 14.38m was good for 3rd and Mike Miller's hurl of 14.36m was good for a 4th place finish.
The Lancers continued to roll throughout the afternoon, getting strong individual performances en route to their 2 provincial titles. Kim Braithwaite proved why she is still the athlete to beat in Canada in the Triple Jump, as she jumped 12.06m on her final attempt to repeat as OUA Champion. Steph Burch's jump of 1.67m was strong enough for a Bronze medal in the High Jump, while Kelley Park and Melanie Lachapelle were too much to handle in the 60m Hurdles, as they earned Gold and Silver medals after finishing with times of 8.53 and 8.77.
On the Men's side, the Lancers domination of long distance events continued as Lancer Cristiano Mauricio blazed around the track to finish in 8:22.24, more than 5 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor in the Men's 3000 metres. Lancers James Gosselin (8:31.17) and Brandon Young (8:34.10) rounded out the top 5 coming in 4th and 5th. In the Men's 1000m, Andrew Coates' time of 2:29.30 was fast enough to land him a Silver medal. Keeping with the Men, Jon Zubyck and Jeff Bianchi were able to grab a 1st and 3rd place finish in the Pole Vault, reaching heights of 5.00m and 4.48m respectively. Zubyck`s performance was particularly overwhelming, as he did not even enter the competition until all of the other competitors had already been eliminated.
The final events of the day were the Men's and Women's 4 x 400m relays. While the Windsor Lancers had the provincial titles already secured, they fought hard until the very end. The Lancer Men's Team of Neil Dietrich, Keenan Geer, Trevor Pye and Derek Quigley finished in 2nd place with a time of 3:24.17, while the Lancer Women also finished strong, taking home the Silver medal in the final event of the meet.
With 2 OUA Team titles now under their belt, the Windsor Lancers will continue preparation in the upcoming weeks as they ready to try and defend their National Cham
